Many new engines do not come equipped with exhaust manifold gaskets. Because the castings are new and machined surfaces are smooth, the manifold fits tightly against the cylinder head without leaks. However, prolonged use, high exhaust temperatures and numerous heating and cooling cycles can cause the manifold sealing surfaces to warp and corrode, leading to leaks.

Federal-Mogul offers exhaust manifold gaskets designed and constructed specifically for this situation. Many of our Fel-Pro exhaust manifold gaskets come with fiber material on one face and perforated steel on the other.

Install the gasket with the steel face toward the manifold and the fiber surface against the head. This will provide a seal while allowing the exhaust manifold to move on the metal surface of the gasket, as it moved on the metal surface of the head when there was no gasket.
