Many modern engines now make use of rubber-coated steel gaskets, which consist of a mild steel core coated with NBR elastomer. The gasket is embossed at all the sealing areas, thus forming stress raisers in the material, which focuses the available bolt load to affect a durable seal.
Three benefits accrue:
- The gasket offers reduced clamp load loss compared to traditional soft gaskets.
- The macrosealing element compensates for flange deflection.
- A microseal is created against the surface roughness of the mating surfaces.
