2D ultrasonic inspection technique enables high performance pistons for diesel downsizing
PACE Award Finalist
The development of a novel two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonic analysis system is helping to create a new generation of high-performance pistons that will enable a substantial further step in diesel engine downsizing. In its first application, the greatly improved cooling capability of the new “raised gallery” piston allowed a customer to achieve a CO 2 reduction of 30 percent compared with the previous generation engine.

Federal-Mogul’s innovative IROX™ bearing shell design enables fuel economy and CO 2 reduction by increasing reliability of high-output, hybrid and stop-start engines
PACE Award Finalist
IROX™ Polymer Overlay, an innovative polymer coated bearing shell that reduces fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions by withstanding mechanical loads produced by heavily boosted engines. IROX also addresses the lubrication challenges associated with frequent engine re-starts found in hybrid and other stop-start engines and can help increase the life of crankshafts and bearing shells by more than five times in more extreme duty applications.

Breakthrough Federal-Mogul sealing technology Provides significant CO 2 emissions reduction for manufacturing operations
PACE Award Finalist
K16™ Bonded Unipiston®, a single-piece bonded, sealed hydraulic clutch piston for automatic transmissions, utilizes the company’s K16 elastomer compound to eliminate the costly and energy-intensive oven curing stage traditionally used to develop the piston seal. Through an innovative combination of polymer chemistries and press cure conditions, Federal-Mogul’s use of the K16 elastomeric compound enables the company to reduce the environmental footprint of its sealing operations with a significant reduction in CO 2 emissions and natural gas consumption. K16 also exceeds the performance of previous seals in terms of wear resistance and life expectancy.
