Monosteel® Piston

Monosteel® Pistons

The Monosteel Piston’s friction-welded, single-piece construction requires no fabrication and no assembly.

Features of the Monosteel Piston include:

  • A large, closed structural gallery with superior bowl rim and ring groove cooling, reducing groove distortion and improving oil control and gas sealing
  • A profiled, bushingless pin bore
  • A full-length skirt for stable piston dynamics, reducing risk of liner cavitation and improving ring sealing
  • Process allows material flexibility with crown material options to reduce corrosion or oxidation, and/or skirt material options to improve manufacturability.

The Monosteel Piston’s inertia-welded steel forging provides strength and enhanced cooling performance for heavy-duty and industrial markets. It has a 250-bar and beyond firing pressure design capability, which meets Euro V and U.S. 10 emissions regulations, and an induction-welded design that brings lightweight steel pistons to the mid-range diesel category.

Federal-Mogul aluminum diesel pistons are gallery-cooled, designed with the latest technology and best-in-class architecture for both light and heavy-duty vehicles.

  • Federal-Mogul’s optimized gallery locations for maximum cooling can result in up to a 10 percent lower bowl rim temperature.
  • Advanced side-casting techniques significantly improve structural stability (even with thin wall designs).
  • Restructuring of the combustion-bowl rim and bowl base can provide up to a 100 percent increase in fatigue life.
